Prime Contractors
Prime contractors are often larger firms with a direct relationship with DoD entities. Since primes have access to all the contract information, they usually demand a higher CMMC level than subcontractors.
Subcontractors
Smaller companies frequently use prime contractors as subcontractors to deliver particular services as part of larger projects. These products must comply with CMMC at the maturity level necessary for the data they manage because the contract still covers them. Higher CMMC levels, however, can be required for other project components.
Suppliers
Prime contractors may rely on other companies to fulfill their obligations under their contract with the DoD, but these suppliers still get included in the DIB. These lower-tier suppliers must therefore adhere to the CMMC maturity level standards that correspond to those items. This maturity level differs from the one the prime contractor is required to reach.
